Bio
Emma Clear (b.1981) is an artist, culture and advocacy worker living and working in the capital region in Finland. With a background in visual arts, she holds a MA in Visual Culture, Curating and Contemporary Art from Aalto University (2023), a BA in Fine Art from Falmouth University, UK (2009) and a Diploma of Art: Sculpture from LSAD, Ireland (2003). Her working practice focuses on advocacy in the arts sector. Working towards a more supportive arts field that encompasses multiple and diverse voices is immensely beneficial to the arts scene. Emma focuses on the opportunities to advocate for under-represented and often hidden groups such as primary caregivers and creative professionals from diverse backgrounds. This is the crux of her professional direction.
As a visual installation artist, her creative practice centers contemporary drawing and storytelling with environmental and care practices. Historically her work has brought together drawing with yarn crafting; materialisms with explorative techniques; writing and collaborative reading processes; growing and foraging as starting points for exploring feminist practices of care and resilience building during times of personal and collective upheaval.
Emma’s work is multi-layered in technique, material and story. Storying and mapping have always been an undercurrent of her artistic practice. Finding connections to the past; Threading, fraying and knotting stories; tangling with experiences living in patriarchal systems of oppression and its impacts on our surroundings, our environment – human and more-than-human. Collaborative processes of research and expanding situated knowledges have become ingrained in her creative work in recent years. Deepening her understanding of the past, present situations and our possible futures.
